If there’s one thing a couple should do who have been labelled with ‘unexplained infertility’ it is to go on a ‘no doctors allowed’ hiatus and really learn about conception. To be blunt, this is because doctors on the whole of way too quick to give the ‘infertile’ label after just a year of trying - discovering when is the best time to get pregnant is the key and this can be done with a little understanding of your own cervical fluid.

It’s pretty standard for doctors to focus on basal body temperate and overlook the significance of changes in cervical fluid. The best indication of when is the best time to get pregnant is by using the changes in cervical fluid as a guide. The unfortunate reality for millions of couples out there is that the medical profession advises timing intercourse around changes in body temperature. If you have been told that checking basal body temperature is actually a post-indication of ovulation and fertility, then at least that is half the story - however most doctors will still tell you to check your past cycles for a predictive indication of future fertile times. Couples are being mislead in both instances!

If couples us the basal temperature method to determine when is the best time to get pregnant, they may actually be doing themselves a disservice, as often by the time an increase in temperature is recorded, the egg has died.

Of course basal body temperature records have a role to play, it is just that the emphasis on it as a sign of fertility can be very misleading. There are many useful things to be gleaned from recording basal body temperature, such as your ovulation cycle length (important for knowing if an egg can be successfully implanted in the uterus) or if you are ovulating properly or not - even for determining if a conception has taken place. Be this as it may, basal temperature is not a good determinant of optimum fertility periods. Cervical fluid can provide the most accurate indications of fertile times so this is what one should be checking! The prime fertile day is the last day of the cervical fluid that looks like eggwhites, or the wettest type of cervical fluid.

For greater chances of conceiving noting changes in cervical fluid and be the key. Before starting to chart the changes in cervical mucus, you need to know what it is you are looking for. Volume, colour and consistency are all important indicators in cervical mucus, and these can alter considerably throughout the menstrual cycle. By using these indicators and charting their changes you can more accurately determine the optimum time for conception.

Directly after the menses have finished, there is usually not much cervical fluid produced. In most women for the first half a week directly after the period there will be little mucus produced, if any at all. The chances of conceiving depend largely on the presence of cervical mucus, so no mucus, no pregnancy. The next mucus phase is between the ‘dry’ time and ovulation, where the fluid is normally tacky, and cloudy or white in colour. During this phase there is normally also less mucus. The consistency of the cervical mucus will change to that of a moist hand lotion a couple of days before ovulation begins. This stage is accompanied by a white to cream coloured mucus.

Ovulation provides the most chances of conception. The most cervical mucus is present during the ovulation phase of the menstrual cycle. At this time the mucus should be looking similar to eggwhites in both colour and consistency, and that is why it is often called the ‘egg-white cervical mucus”. The eggwhite cervical mucus is an indicator that the optimum time for conception has arrived.

By taking notice of the changes in your cervical mucus, you can track your cycle more accurately, and always know where you are in your cycle. By tracking these changes over a number of months, you can get a very good indication of your exact ovulation times and use this as a guide for knowing when the optimum time for conception is.
