Online dating can be fun, but do not neglect safety and common sense when you try to hook up with a mate. At minimum, take caution in the following areas.

Computer Security

Make sure you have some kind of computer security before hitting the dating sites. You should have both a firewall and an anti-virus program for your email and when you browse the dating sites. A free firewall is made by Zone Alarm and a free anti-virus program is AVG.

Protect Yourself

Make sure you start out using only the big and popular dating sites. If you see them advertising on TV then they are probably safe. After all, if they can afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars advertising, they must be do something right by their members. I also suggest that you ask family and friends about what dating site they used. You can always move on to more niche dating sites once you get some experience.

Remember, safety first. Protect your computer and yourself with the right tools and knowledge and you will have a fun experience.

With safety covered, I will now talk about how to build an online relationship. Online relationships need tending to if you want them to grow just like relationships offline.

1. Take time and make time. Does your online date get in touch with you regularly? Do you do the same? Neglecting virtual meetings can be considered abuse or neglect, so treat each others time with respect. If it is lacking, it might mean time to move on.

2. Communication needs to “feel” right for both of you. If one of you is too pushy about meeting, for instance, that can give off bad vibes. So do not rush. Take time to learn more about each other and develop trust.

3. Respect each others right to privacy. Do not share photos or emails with your other friends, especially if it was sent to you in confidence.

4. Share both online and offline experiences. Online - send digital cards, website links, your favorite music and videos, pics of your pet, etc. Offline - send cards, postcards, and pics from your local area like a pic of your house, your car, the beautiful park across the street, etc.

Tend your online relationship. Water it with care and over time it can sprout and grow.
